Commuion Statement
PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 1 Corinthians 11:27-28
Because we care for you, we ask that you carefully review the following statements:
I have been baptized into the name of the one true God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples to all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
I have been instructed concerning the meaning of Holy Communion, and I understand the importance of self-examination prior to coming to the Lord’s Supper.
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29
I confess that I am a sinner in need of forgiveness. I am sorry for my sins.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
I believe that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is my Savior from sin, death, and the power of the devil.
4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:4-5,8-9
I believe that the body and blood of Jesus Christ are really present in the bread and wine of Holy Communion, and I desire to receive Christ’s body and blood, given and shed for the forgiveness of my sins.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
Matthew 26:26-28
As far as I know, I am at peace with everyone. I harbor no hatred or vengeance in my heart. If I am struggling with this or similar issues, I am seeking God’s comfort, presence, and strength through this Meal to resolve them.
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift”. Matthew 5:23-24
By the power of the Holy Spirit, I desire and intend to lead a more Godly and Christ like life, trusting in God’s promises and obeying His commands.
Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:1,5,12-14
Members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and St. Paul Lutheran Church believe that Jesus Christ is our personal Lord and Savior and affirm the statements above. If you agree, without reservation, to these seven above statements, you are invited to come to the Lord’s Supper. If you do not agree with one or more of the seven statements, please refrain from participating in Holy Communion. Our communion practice is not intended to offend or exclude, but is rather an expression of our concern for people and our high regard for the Sacrament as Christ instituted it. If you agree with the seven statements above but are not a member of St. Paul Lutheran, we would invite you to give prayerful consideration to joining our partnership in the Gospel. You are encouraged to speak with our Pastor or Elders regarding any statement(s) of disagreement and/or regarding the process of joining St. Paul Lutheran congregation.
God bless you!
